Blog Prompt #2: Googlization
Google has turned itself into a multi-billion dollar concept by providing people access to almost any information at any time. We are able to gather quick responses, as well as conduct secondary research through scholarly sources. Google has helped businesses and organizations reach their targeted audiences, and has provided educational experiences. The opportunities are endless when it comes to googles innovative concept. But in reality, all organization’s have their pros and cons.
Does Google have too much power over our lives? I think we can argue that technology itself possess too much power. However, considering the amount of opportunities and discoveries the world has had because of technology, I would not consider its power to be completely negative. Google is similar in this sense because it is a power source for knowledge and opportunity. Instead of having to go to an encyclopedia, we are able to retrieve information at the tips of our fingers. Instead of spending hours in libraries finding the right source, we’re able to conduct more research through search engines. Not only has this become more efficient, but it has increased our standards in becoming a prestigious world.
Are we addicted to Google? I would definitely say so. Although it has helped us achieve more, it has cause us to become extensively reliant on it in return. This has also endangered our privacy to an extent. Google collects data based on our searches. This may seem violating, but in the end it is the harsh reality of being so dependent on a technological search engine. In my own perspective, I think it is genius for Google to gather data based on our searches because they are able to use that information to benefit not only themselves, but the people doing the searching. This gives Google the opportunity to provide more valuable and relevant information.
In a sense, Google does have power over us. But I think some of the power it enforces is meant for our benefit.
